Four Fundamental Shifts in Mindset to Improve Your Business

Struggling to get your business off the ground? Shopify expert Connor Shelefontiuk shows us how to shift our mindsets to achieve the things we’ve always wanted—but deep down don’t believe we can have.

We’ve all met “that” person. You know… the one who has big business dreams but never does anything to achieve them. They constantly talk about starting that lucrative business or patenting that idea but, there is always another reason as to why they haven’t started yet.

Maybe, you are that person.

A few short years ago, I was in that exact position. I didn’t attend college or have any formal business training past high school. I had a mediocre job and a pretty intense video game addiction, which was sabotaging any and every opportunity to be productive.

Fast-forward a few years, and I had built a $4 million dollar Shopify business.

How did I change the trajectory of my life in such a short amount of time?

Mindset. Adjusting my mindset was the core of what led to my success. And every single person can do the same.

Here are four foundational mindset adjustments that, if you apply, will lead to a more productive life and help you achieve your version of success.

1. There is no such thing as losing money

As a successful Shopify business owner and coach, I answer a lot of questions from people interested in building their own business. And the Number 1 question I get is: What happens if I lose money?

My answer is the same every time: If you have the right mindset/mentality, there’s no such thing as losing money.

Losing money is a fear that we create that holds us back from accomplishing something great. Whenever you spend money, you gain a little bit of knowledge or experience. You are investing in yourself.

Think of it this way: if you go to college for four years, you are likely going to spend a good amount of money. You’re investing that money and time into your personal development. It’s teaching you a skillset to be successful.

The same can be said for any investment in a business. Even if you don’t always see a financial return, you have gained knowledge and insight. When I look back at the first time I spent money on Facebook Ads and I didn’t see a return, I can pinpoint where and what I learned that has contributed to what I do today.

This is the first and most important shift in an entrepreneur’s mindset, because until you can get comfortable spending money, you’ll never be able to do anything in business. It sets us up for the next shift…

2. Truly, you cannot fail

Probably the biggest reason people do not achieve their dreams in life is because of the fear of failure. Many times, this fear prevents us from even starting.

But, here’s the real truth–as long as you’re trying, ultimate failure is an illusion. Every single failure is actually a win when you learn from it. Failure is the best teacher and will make you better at whatever you’re doing, as long as your mindset is to learn from it.

When I was first starting my Shopify business, there was a season of a lot of trial and error which, if I had been in the wrong mindset, would have discouraged me and potentially led to me giving up.

And that’s the key. The only way to truly fail is to give up.

3. Hesitation will stop your success

Once you understand that you’re never wasting money, you’re investing in your own education, it’s easier to see “failure” as part of a bigger learning process.

But this next mindset shift – to constantly taking action – can be tricky. That is because, so many times, hesitation seems smart. When you are not sure what the next step is, it seems logical to gather more information.

But, the fact is, as an entrepreneur, you’ll never have all of the facts. The only way to know if something is the right decision is to try it (fail, learn, and try again). It’s all too easy to delay important decisions forever waiting for just a little more information.

So, basically, the longer you take to jump in and start, the longer you’re procrastinating your own success.

The sooner you begin your entrepreneurial journey, the sooner you’re going to find that breakthrough you’ve been looking for.

4. Everyone should have a mentor

Finding a mentor was probably the single most valuable thing I did in my journey to success. And that is a huge reason why I now offer my insight to others who are just starting out in StartupCamp’s Shopify courses.

A mentor is basically a shortcut to your success – the only real shortcut that I know of. Essentially, instead of learning from your own mistakes, your learning from someone else’s (and their victories, too). The right mentor will save you from so much unnecessary stress and uncertainty.

If that’s not enough to convince you, it will save a significant amount of time and money.

But it requires a huge mindset shift to go from “I can do it on my own” to “I can (and should) ask for help.”

How do you foster this mindset shift? Start by remembering that a good entrepreneur – the only successful entrepreneurs out there – maximize their resources.

A mentor should be your most valuable resource. And these people are available if you go looking for them. That might be a friend or relative with a successful business, or a mastermind (the most cost-effective way to get real mentorship).

What is Your Next Step?

These specific shifts in my thinking led me to find success in business and are what now drive me to pursue my other dreams in life.

It all boils down to this: You don’t have to be what society tells you to be.

You can create the life you want to have if you are willing to break the rules that were placed on you. By all of society’s standards, I was not cut out to be successful. But I was able to change my mindset, which led to me changing the direction of my life.

Ultimately, if you want to succeed as an entrepreneur, you have to think like one.

Which of these mindset shifts have you put in place in your own life, and how have they helped you? What are you working on right now? I would love to hear from you in the comments below!
