The secret to almost all great leaders is their understanding of what motivates the human mind. Every notable entrepreneur, visionary, engineer, author, and speaker has harnessed this tricky emotional skill and has governed it in their favor.
A few years ago Daniel Pink published “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us”. I read this book while leading 40 employees at my company Sevenly and it completely changed my outlook on motivation.
His findings prove people are motivated by 3 things:
1. Autonomy: People want to have control over their work.
2. Mastery: People want to get better at what they do.
3. Purpose: People want to be part of something that is bigger than they are.
But money, salary, and bonuses didn’t make the cut. Shockingly, he continues by telling us that money has no positive effect on increased performance whatsoever. What!? He leaves us with this powerful statement:
The best use of money as a motivator is to pay people enough to take the issue of money off the table.
The video below brilliantly outlines his concept. It continues to make lists like “Top videos every entrepreneur should watch” for a good reason. Take a moment and get smarter.
